Levi crossed his arms and tucked his hands in his armpits in a stance that was clearly defensive. “With all of that shit going on, no wonder I dreamed of the box again. I haven’t had a nightmare about that place in a long time.”

“What’s the box?” Trudy watched with growing concern as his face tightened, jaw muscles flexed, and his eyes clouded with turbulent memories.

“A root cellar. A small place. Standing up, you could extend your arms out from your sides and touch the walls. It was cool and damned cold in there at night.”

“Where was this?”

“The Missouri Ozarks. Out in the wilds. It was a school set up on an abandoned farm property. They’d turned the farmhouse into a dormitory and the barn into a school.” He made a scoffing sound. “Not that they provided much of an education. Mostly, we read and memorized the Bible. There were classes in literature, English, math, a little science and geography here and there, but that was about it.”

“How old were you when you went there?”

“Nine. When I arrived I had just turned nine. I left when I was almost eleven to go to a school in Wyoming.”

“Nine.” She took up her own defensive stance, hunching her shoulders and rubbing her hands up and down her arms. Thinking of him as a nine-year-old being carted off to a place where he was schooled in a barn made her skin break out in gooseflesh. “I don’t know how your parents could send their little boy away like that.”

He gave an indolent shrug that she didn’t buy for one second. “They were trying to chase the devil out of me.”

“Idiotic,” she murmured.

“They put us in the box when we were bad.” One corner of his mouth lifted fractionally. “And I was bad. Bad to the bone.”

“What do you do that was so terrible?” She couldn’t imagine any sane reason to put a child down into a hole.

“I refused to say that my father was right and that I was a liar.”

“About your psychic abilities,” she clarified. “So, it was a religious thing with your parents? They truly felt that your abilities were a sign of evil . . . of the devil?”

“That’s what my father thought . . . or that’s his story and he’s sticking to it.” A quick, half-smile flitted across his lips. “He’s an intelligent man, so I’ve always believed that he’s mainly intimidated by my abilities. He’s a classic narcissist. Therefore, it must be impossible for him to think that I can do things he can’t. As for my mother?” He gazed up at the stars and violet shadows caressed his achingly handsome face. “I don’t know. She probably wished I’d just tell my father what he wanted to hear and do what he said to do. That’s what she did. She went along with whatever shit he shoveled out.”

She wanted to touch him. No, she wanted to hold him, but she stood still as her heart constricted with pain for him. She wanted to cry, but she knew he didn’t want her tears, so she swallowed the burning ball of emotion in her throat. He was talking and she was grateful, but what he was saying was difficult to hear. His upbringing had been a long nightmare from which he couldn’t awaken – and he was just scratching the surface. That’s what bothered her more than anything. His traumas ran deep. Soul deep.

“And the box?” she asked in a whisper. “How long did they keep children in there?”

“An hour at first. Then hours. I graduated to all day and then to all day and all night. The nights were the worst. It was cold in there and black as pitch. That’s when the rats would come out.”

Trudy couldn’t stop the shudder that shook her from head to toes. She cleared her throat. “R-rats?”

“Big mother-fuckers. Of course, I was only a kid, so they seemed like they were the size of Volkswagens. I couldn’t see them, but I could hear them scurrying around and I could feel them. They’d run across my feet. One of them jumped on my shoulder and bit my neck. I screamed and screamed. Screamed my fucking lungs out that night.” He glanced at her from the corner of his eyes. “That’s why my voice is husky. I damaged my vocal chords. I couldn’t talk above a whisper for a couple of months after that and my voice never fully recovered.”

“I love your voice,” she said, the declaration lifting from her heart onto her lips.

“Really?” He shook his head and sent her a baffled grin. “I think I sound like a bad actor doing a commercial for sore throat lozenges.”

She shook her head and decided to allow her heart to keep talking. “Your voice matches the rest of you. Sexy as hell.”

His arms slipped down his body and his shoulders lost some of their stiffness. He held out a hand to her. “Come here, you.”
That night she awoke screaming. She could only recall pieces of the visions that had terrified her to wakefulness. She’d seen a woman handcuffed to a bed. Naked. A blond woman with a slim body. Being whipped with a cane. Trudy could still feel the impression of the instrument in the palm of her hand – or in the hand of the man who had managed to invade her head. She couldn’t tell if the woman had liked being whipped or not. She’d moaned – but were they moans of pleasure, pain, or both?

The man wielding the cane had taken great pleasure from it. He’d derived intense satisfaction from inflicting pain. With one hand, he’d struck with the cane again, striping the woman’s buttocks, and with his other he’d massaged his thick, hard cock.
Oh, yes, yes, yes! Scream, bitch, scream! Louder. Harder. Scream!

That’s all she could remember. She wasn’t sure if it was something she’d dreamed or if her mind had been taken over by someone else’s thoughts. All she knew was that she wanted Levi’s arms around her.

Although it was irrational and a nasty voice in her head told her she was being a baby, a needy, bawling baby, she snatched up her cellphone and called him. It was 3:45 a.m. in Atlanta and 12:45 a.m. in Seattle. The phone rang eight times before she heard a scuffling, a muffled curse, and then his voice – his raspy, sleepy voice.

“Yeah, yeah. I’m here. What’s going on?”

“Levi.” She just wanted to say his name. For that moment, it was enough.

“At your service. You okay, Tru?”

“I had a bad dream. It’s so stupid to call and wake you up. You’re rolling your eyes, aren’t you and thinking that I’ve lost my marbles.”

“Lost your marbles?’ He sighed, then chuckled. “Haven’t heard that in a while. What was the dream about?”

“A man beating a woman. I woke up screaming, but I don’t remember much about it.”

“Relax. Take some deep breaths. Drink some water or milk. The details might come back to you. Are you sure it was a dream and not one of your visions?”

“I don’t know. Maybe.” She released a huff of breath. “The thing is . . . I miss you, you know?” She brought her knees up and hugged them. “You’re there and busy and around people. Quintara’s with you. I’m here in this bed that smells like you. Your fingerprints are on everything. I feel stuck. Stuck thinking about you and what an impatient smart ass I can be and how I should thank my lucky stars every freakin’ day that you want to be with me when you could be giving your sexy, drop-dead gorgeousness to some pretty, blond, busty thing who can suck the enamel off your teeth and I can’t even—.”

“Stop, stop, stop!”

She drew in a breath and realized that he was laughing. “What’s funny?”

“You! Ahhh.”

She could hear the rasp of his hand as he rubbed his whiskered jaw and cheeks and the rustle of sheets. Resting her forehead against her knees, she realized in the ensuing silence that she’d been talking so fast he probably didn’t understand anything she’d said.

“I’ll be back tomorrow. We’ll talk about all of this then. Take a couple of aspirin and go back to sleep. Okay?”

“Okay.” She winced at the smallness of her voice. She tried again. “Okay.” Better.

“And by the way, I miss you, too.” He chuckled again. “Jesus, Tru. Suck the enamel off my teeth? Tell you what, I’ll work on my many issues and you work on your self-esteem problem. Is that a deal?”

“Deal.” She nodded and wished she could touch him.

‘Shake on it.”

She smiled. “Shake.”

“Okay. See you soon.”

“But not soon enough.” Her voice broke on the last word and she ended the call, then rolled onto her side and let the hot tears run down her cheeks. It was stupid to be crying, stupid to be so upset over . . . over nothing really. Except that she had the boyfriend blues. Her phone binged and she pressed the button to read the text.

Are you crying? You better not be crying.

Sniffing and wiping away tears, she texted back. I’m okay.

I know you are. Crying, that is. Think of good things. Relax. Sleep tight, baby.

She smiled. I’ll think of you. Good night, my pretty.

Excerpt 1:
Dade
January
I saw her as soon as I stepped off the bus from the airport. How could I miss her? The sun was reflecting off the blonde hair piled messily on top of her head. She was laughing at something the pool boy was saying as he handed her some pink, frilly drink with a blue umbrella. The umbrella matched her bikini which perfectly showcased her curves.
Her laugh was musical. I couldn’t see her eyes because they were hidden behind mirrored aviators, but something told me they would be light. I bet they’re blue.
The tap on my arm alerts me to the fact that the pretty driver is speaking to me, and apparently has been for a bit. Shifting my attention from the alluring blonde near the pool, I smile sheepishly at her and shrug. “I’m sorry; I spaced out. I apologize. I have no idea what you were just saying.” Her eyes swing toward the pool before returning to my own. “I understand your distraction. The scenery over there is quite beautiful,” she says with a smile.
Unintentionally, my gaze returns to the pool. The aviators are pointed in my direction. Pulling my own shades down, I wink. Her mouth pops open. Smiling, I turn and head into the hotel to get checked in.
After getting settled into the room, I decide to investigate the pool. Maybe the blonde is still there. Spending a few days with her in this tropical paradise wouldn’t be a hardship. I check myself out in the mirror and I see a tall, fit body. My shoulders are defined. My arms are toned and tight and show off my many tattoos. My chest is also chiseled and tattooed and my torso is long and sculpted. I work my ass off for this body and I’m proud of it. The appreciation from the opposite sex doesn’t hurt either.
Lord, I need this break. Things have been insane at home. We just finished a tour with the band. Jude got married. Jessie got engaged. Who the hell would have thought that would ever happen?! My sister is home from California and all I want to do is protect her from the evils of the world, but she and Liam both live in my house now and it’s like a damn warzone. Those two are constantly at each other’s throats. My sweet little sister is just what my philandering band mate needs, and both want the other fiercely, yet both are too outraged at the others mere existence to figure it out. Something needs to happen with them, and soon, or everyone is going to be miserable. Thankfully, I left them alone together while I’m away to figure it out, whichever way it goes, while I catch some sun and decompress.

OUR REVIEW****

4 Stars

Here we have...Dade's Story. You know the one that was left hanging at the end of Liam and Clove's...
The one we were sitting on the edge of our seats for.

Dade took a much needed trip, as you may remember in the last book. He escaped leaving Liam alone with Clove. During this Vacation he met the gorgeous Melonie...or was it Rayne?

Their attraction was one that other's could sense. At they instantly fell in to a rhythm...one they both couldn't get over. The problem was they were so short with the information they shared with one another that when an emergency back home separated them...they had no further contract. Not for lack of trying on Dade's part. He tried to reach out only to find then that the name he was given wasn't actually her name.
Running in to one another again was a complete and total shock and tempers flew and went in to overdrive. Yet they both longed for one another...

Fueled with jealousy and unsaid words their journey became slightly rocky. They had a really hard time sharing much needed information and clarification that needed to be said. Through it all they fought to find their place in each others lives. The friends that stood behind them, leading them in the right direction helped without a doubt.

In the end will they find their happiness? Will they be able to move passed all the jealousy and be able to trust each other?

Bayou Stix has been an impressionable group of characters and following their stories has continued to be a great ride.

Prologue
Portland, Oregon
June 2001

The small room was illuminated only by moonlight that trespassed between the wide slats of the white plantation shutters. By day the bedroom was cheerful, awash in feminine shades of the palest pink and green with scalloped white wood furniture and a small white iron chandelier dangling daintily from the ceiling. Now, after midnight, it was dark with silvery light pooling just below the large window. The room’s inhabitant was long asleep, her dark hair fanned out across the shell-pink pillow, framing her China doll face and roseate lips. She’d been tired, having endured a long day of anticipation. Right now her peaceful slumber was interrupted by an abrupt inability to breathe. The resulting gasping caused her to waken suddenly, panicked.
“Shhh. It’s just me. Stay still.”
The gravelly voice came out of the darkness. Ali knew it belonged to her aunt’s boyfriend. He’d told her to call him Uncle Joel but Ali had just met him four days before. Aunt Lauren and Joel were staying the week with Ali and her mother, visiting for Ali’s birthday—a surprise to make up for the fact that her father was away. But why did Joel keep coming into her room? Last night she’d awakened to find him looming over her with scary eyes. The night before that she bolted up from a deep sleep, afraid that someone was hiding in the shadowy corner near the drapes. And now this, tonight.
“Stop! Get off me! I can’t breathe… Maaaaa!” she screamed, feeling his hands all over her body. He clapped his huge hand over her mouth mid-scream, roughly grinding her lips into her teeth, abrading her gums. The taste of salty blood and her inability to draw any breath caused her to kick her legs wildly in boundless terror. Undeterred, his other hand yanked down her white cotton underpants covered in tiny blue rosebuds, as she desperately tried to squirm away, but he had her pinned down. A few inches were all she managed to travel before he swiftly halted her progress, grabbing her with both of his meaty hands and dragging her toward him. “Come back here, you little bitch. I’m not done with you. If you scream again, I’m going to spank your heinie bloody. Now shut up and be nice to me!”
He tore off her pajama gown and touched her naked body everywhere, putting fingers into her private places, licking her with his gross tongue, grunting and breathing noisily. He got spit all over her skin and it smelled sour. The nauseating odor rushed saliva into her mouth where it roiled with blood, and she began to choke as it trickled down her throat. Ali heard him unzip his pants and she didn’t know why but she was too frantic to wonder. He was in the process of flipping her over onto her stomach when she again screamed, this time at the top of her lungs, and then the door flung open so hard it slammed into the wall with a thunderous bang, leaving a crater in the wall the size of the doorknob.
She’d never heard her mother sound like she did, the blackest fury barely contained as she attacked the man with her voice. “Get off my daughter, you disgusting, vile piece of nothing,” her mother screeched at a bloodcurdling pitch. “I’ll rip your balls right off and make you eat them.”
Joel stood up. That’s when Ali saw he was in his boxer shorts, his pants around his knees. He scurried out of the room like a panicked rat, without a backward glance, as her mother came forward to embrace her daughter in her arms. The girl was trembling from head to toe and her nostrils were still filled with the man’s rank odor of stale beer and old sweat. She didn’t think she’d ever forget it.
“Shh, come sleep in my bed tonight. Everything will be fine, I promise,” her mother’s voice crooned but Ali had never heard it so shaky. As she hugged her mother, it was hard for her to tell which one of them trembled more. “Tomorrow is your birthday and we’re going to have so much fun. I’m so sorry, Ali. It will all be okay.” She tightly grasped her daughter, rocking her back and forth, over and over. They sat like that for nearly an hour. Ali sensed her mother’s uncertainty.
Finally, she released her grip and Ali scampered into her mother’s room, climbing up into the big bed. Nothing was as comforting as a mother’s bed and so she managed a small smile and curled up into a ball. If she made the ball really, really tight, the shivering stopped. From that night on, it was how she always slept, in a tight fetal position, impregnable and protected by her hard outer shell. Tonight, sleep was long in coming and she so wanted to get there so she could wake up and it would be morning—and not just any morning, but the morning of her tenth birthday.

EXCERPT:

“What are you doing?” I asked breathily, licking my lips and silently begging him to kiss me.
He didn’t answer at first. He looked at me predatorily before leaning down to nibble on my neck. The feeling of his teeth lightly grazing my skin while the threat of someone walking down the hallway and turning the corner made me clench tightly. His fingers gripped my hips and desire washed over me.  His hands caused goosebumps to erupt everywhere he touched.  My body hummed from the electric currant that flowed between us. The anticipation I felt for Colton’s kiss was almost unbearable.
“What are you doing?” I repeated, wrapping my arms around his neck.
Leaning in so that our lips were almost touching, Colton answered sexily, “You.”

AUTHOR BIO:

I am a married event planner, life coach and instructor.  Between my awesome friends and family and my amazing husband, I am constantly surrounded by love.  My goal at all times is to love what I’m doing and enjoy life.  I love shopping and football with equal fervor.  I’m an amateur movie critic (i.e. my husband and I watch and critique a lot of movies for fun). I love to read, but since I’ve been writing, I don’t read as much as I used to. I love music. A good lyric with a good melody can paint a vivid picture and invoke such a range of emotions. I have a soft spot for most mediums of creative, artistic expression. But music is probably my favorite.

The Natasha Release Day Blitz

Short Excerpt
“Get in here, girl.” Marin Petrov pounded on his desk. Natasha heard it echo all the way in her own office.
Jolting from the forms she had been filling out for his next business trip, Natasha slid her feet into her black stilettos and quickly made her way from her office into his. The absurdity of one of the worst human traffickers in Europe having an office fit for a lawyer never ceased to strike her as disturbingly or perhaps disgustingly normal. She kept her expression blank and bored when she stepped in front of him.
His gaze drifted, as it always did, from her pointed heels along her stockings to her leather skirt and white buttoned blouse. Natasha raised an eyebrow at him. She never let him intimidate her. It was why he’d kept her alive when most of his secretaries met untimely accidents when their noses strayed too far into his business.
“We’re moving to Kiev.” Petrov tossed a stack of papers in her direction. She crouched down to retrieve them, careful not to give him the view he wanted. “Get it organised. Now.”
Natasha nodded politely and exited the office as quickly as she had entered it. Her disgust for the man was difficult to mask at times. Of all the undercover assignments Natasha Itsov had taken for Interpol, she thought working with the Auctioneer might possibly be the worst. She glanced briefly down at the documents in her hands and froze when a familiar name caught her attention.
Blackbird Security Firm.
The last time Natasha had dealt with Blackbird there had been complications. Major complications. She wondered briefly about the broken-hearted man she had left behind. Poor Darren. A smile briefly flashed across her face.   It lit up her icy blue eyes. Her full lips slowly dropped down into a frown though as she considered the implications of Petrov’s interest in the security firm.
She had met Darren Martel when they worked on a joint-task force many years ago on a human trafficking case for the International Criminal Court. Their affair had been brief but fiery. She could still picture every inch of his freckled skin in her mind and had frequent dreams about tying him to her bed.
Oh, sweet Darren.
Why would Petrov be interested in Blackbird?
It was a question still plaguing Natasha several days later while setting up the office in Kiev. She heard rumours of a new girl Petrov had gone to Moldova to grab. Her Interpol handler told her they’d almost captured him there. They grabbed another slimy bastard instead, Valentin Krupin. Steven Samuels and Gareth Richardson from Blackbird had contacted them with the info but the wolves were gone with the girl before they arrived.
Her fingers itched to pick up her telephone, but it was too risky for direct contact. Petrov would kill her if he found out, and Interpol wouldn’t be pleased with her either if she ruined years of undercover work. Natasha finally decided to create a dummy e-mail account. She used old codes Darren would remember to let him know where she was, what she was doing and warn him about the Auctioneer.
Her krasnij lis.
Her red fox.

Ivy
4 Stars

Ivy became a bit of a recluse after her husbands death, but a necessary trip shopping for Christmas presents makes her rethink becoming a hermit when the store is attacked by terrorists. Being rescued by two hunky men is definitely the highlight of her day, except for her weird reaction to them.

Steven and Gareth didn't expect to find their mate while on a mission, but now that they have they don't wanna ever let her go. Her past though gives them cause to go slowly so that they are all sure they are truly meant to be together.

Ivy might be a bit of an introvert, but get her going and she'll tear you to pieces in an instant. She's feisty and quite the spitfire when someone gets her going.

Steven is an Alpha male and he takes care of those he's closest to him. As the older of the two wolves he's the more calm one thinking things through before doing something to make sure it's the right course of action.

Gareth is and Alpha too although Steven above him when he needs a good kick in the head. He does what needs to be done to protect others and has no qualms about throwing you over his shoulder if you get in his way.

The story is interesting and keeps you guessing what the characters will do next. There are times when I wish there was more to the story to help understand the background of the characters and also more information about the paranormal world created in the story. Overall I liked flow and the storyline keeps you engrossed in whats happening with the characters and you get sucked into their world.

Natasha

4 Stars

Natasha is the queen of leaving, she's as cold hearted as they come especially when it came to her intended mate. She thought she was doing what was best, but it nearly destroyed both of them. Now their paths are crossing again, will they be able to figure things out this time or will things between them be worse than ever before?

Darren was lost after his mate disappeared, it nearly killed him and now that she's back he's not sure he can trust her to not break him again. He's a sweetie, always thinking about those around him but when it comes to himself he's so lost by his own love that he doesn't know if listening his heart is a good idea.

The story continues with bad guy Petrov still trying to get Ivy and everyone scrambling trying to protect her and figure out why capturing her is so important. While everything is going on Natasha and Darren are trying to overcome the heartache of their pasts while trying to figure out if they have a future.

Once again the story is interesting, but again I wished there would have been more back story and information about shifters to understand the story better.
