excerpt
So, I decide to change the way I live. I’ve dreamed of finding Mr. Right, getting married and settling down. But guys run for the hills when they find out who I am, or they only want me for my money. I can’t deal with this anymore. I’ve had a great life though, again.....never wanting for anything. There has to be so much more to this world than having everything handed to you on the proverbial silver spoon. As I mentally prepare for the changes upcoming in my life, Holland walks right into my room without knocking. “Clare? What are you doing in here? I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” “I’ve been right here, thinking.” “What about?” She asks as she sits down on the bed next to me. “Life in general.” She nods, staring at our faces in the mirror. “Yeah, it’s great it?” She smiles as she lays back on the bed, her lavender skirt hiking up on her legs, exposing thigh high stockings. I stare for a brief moment, wondering why she’d have on thigh highs, but then I remember the Mabry twins and it all makes sense. “No, actually it isn’t,” I say as I stand up and brush my hands down my skirt in a feeble attempt to straighten the now wrinkled chiffon. Holland sits up and stares at me in confusion. “Is this all there is?” I ask as I wave my hand like a model at a car show. “What do you mean?” She asks, one eyebrow raised. “This! All of this!” I say as I twirl like a ballerina. “There has to be more in life than this.” “I’m sorry Clarity, but I’m not getting it.” “I’ve had enough of this,” I say again as I glance around the room. “I want to be a normal person, Hol. I want to settle down, get married. Squeeze out a few rug rats, have a normal life. I wanna be like everyone else.” “Okay, you’re freaking me out. What the fuck are you talking about?” “You really don’t get it do you?” I say as I storm out of the room, but she catches the door and follows me out. “Clare, stop! Explain it to me. What are you talking about?” She asks again. I stop and slowly turn back to her. She’s standing there with her hands on her hips. “These!” I scream, as I pull my designer shoes off and throw them down the hall. I walk into the hall bathroom and wet a wash cloth and proceed to wash my face. “This!” I scream once again as I frantically wash my make up off. Then I stomp back into my room and open the dresser, yanking out a pair of jeans and a tee shirt, silently thankful that I keep spare clothes here for these weekends. It’s bad enough that I have to ride here via limo, but having to go home the next day in the same dress is mortifying. I realize how that sounds as I turn my back towards Holland. “Unzip me please.” I ask, quietly but demanding. “What are you doing?” She asks again, this time fear in her eyes. “I’m changing clothes, what does it look like I’m doing?” I snap at her. I know this isn’t her fault, but she should be seeing this the way I am. She’s wealthy too, though not as wealthy as I am. I cringe on the inside as I think those words. “But there’s a party going on outside.” She says as she complies and lowers my zipper. The dress slides down my body into a puddle on the floor. I yank on the tee shirt and jeans and find my loafers in the closet. “I. Am. Done. Done with this life, done with being a selfish bitch and done with money. I’m getting out, Holland. O U T! I want to live a different life, one with meaning. One without rules, standards and etiquette. I wanna be a woman, not a pawn in daddy’s world. I want to make my own money, live my own life. And this,” I say as I once again wave my hand around my old bedroom, “Ends today.”

CHAPTER ONE
Death by lethal injection.
Whitney had waited years to hear those four words. Final justice for a man who’d taken so much from her and her fiancé, Blake Barnett. She stood on the concrete steps outside the seven storey L-shaped courthouse waiting for her cameraman, Jerry Maxwell, to give her the on-air countdown. After a last minute microphone check, Whitney drew a deep breath then exhaled slowly.
Jerry held up his fingers. “In five…four…three…two…one.”
“I’m reporting live outside the district courthouse on South Las Vegas Boulevard. Moments ago, District Attorney Jason Kurz announced the jury had sentenced Nathan Shaw to death by lethal injection. Mr. Kurz stated the jury found, unanimously and beyond a reasonable doubt, that Mr. Shaw is a continuing threat to society.”
She swallowed hard, barely able to get the words out.
“A month ago, Nathan Shaw, owner of ShawBioGen, was found guilty on four counts of conspiracy to commit murder and one count of attempted murder of a federal agent.”
That FBI agent is the man I love.
The memory of that day was before her in all its bloody glory. The image of Blake shot and left to die played over and over in her mind. Perspiration broke out across her forehead.
Damn it. Not now. Breathe…
“Mr. Shaw had hired a hitman to kill Claire Barnett, a microbiologist with his company, Senator Mason Bailey, George Raines, an editor with WBNN-TV, and District Attorney Kate Leathham in hopes of covering up his illegal human cloning project.” Sadness tugged at her heart. So many lives lost. Her legs trembled. “Nathan Shaw will be executed at Nevada State Prison in Carson City. His attorney, Warren Demotteo, is expected to file a formal appeal later today.”
She paused to take a breath. “This is Whitney Steel. News3.”
Jerry gave a quick nod, his cue they were off the air.
Whitney lowered the microphone and kept it clutched in her right hand as she watched two workers at the other end of the courthouse dismantling the makeshift press conference tent used earlier.
“Are you okay?” Jerry removed the camera from his shoulder and placed it on the ground. “For a minute there, I thought you were going to pass out.”
Her body went limp with relief. Her gaze met his. She smiled and picked up her purse from the step and swung it over her shoulder. “I’ll be fine.”
It’s finally over.
With Nathan Shaw’s sentencing behind her, now she could focus on her upcoming wedding on August second which was less than three weeks away. She couldn’t wait. And neither could Blake.
In the parking lot, Jerry opened the rear door of the News3 satellite broadcast van and loaded their equipment.
Whitney eyed a white SUV with dark tinted windows stop a car’s length away. With the lot full due to the sentencing, the driver appeared to be waiting for their spot.
Jerry slammed the van door shut. “You ready?”
“Yeah, let’s get back to the station.” She glanced over her shoulder.
Three men jumped out of the SUV wearing black balaclavas.
They barreled toward her.
She spotted guns in their hands.
After a brief moment of paralyzing disbelief, Whitney clutched her purse and bolted to the passenger side of the vehicle.
“Get in. Hurry!” Jerry yelled.
She reached for the door handle but a strong arm looped around her neck and dragged her back.
The heels of her shoes scrapped against the pavement. “Let go—of me.”
The man covered her mouth with a leather-gloved hand and pulled her between the parked cars and out of sight.
She felt the muzzle of the gun jab into her back.
Moist breath brushed against her ear. “Shut the hell up.”
Another man held a gun to Jerry’s temple. “You’re going to film this. Live. Understand?”
Jerry held up his hands, his eyes wide. “Okay, okay.  But—it’s going to take a few minutes to setup the feed.” He opened the van’s back door again and fumbled for his equipment.
Whitney squirmed.
The man tightened his grip around her neck.
She wheezed and fought for a breath.
Who were these men? What did they want?
The sane voice in her head ordered her to stay still. Even though she had a black belt in karate and was skilled at crushing a person’s windpipe or disarming a knife-wielding attacker, she wasn’t stupid enough to take on three guys that were double her height and weight with guns aimed at her. All she could do was watch, stay as calm as possible, and hope someone would see what was going on and call the police.
When Jerry had the live feed setup, he stood in front of them, camera ready. His voice trembled. “You’re on.”
The third man, the tallest of the group, pulled a red and white bandana out of a small plastic bag he had stuffed in the pocket of his jeans.
He pressed the moist cloth over her mouth and nose and held it there.
She squirmed and kicked but it was useless. Her head started to buzz. The sickly sweet smell mixed with the rotten odor of strong cleaning solution invaded her head.
Blood pounded in her ears and male voices turned faint and distorted.
As her breathing slowed every muscle turned to mush. Then blackness drowned her vision and she realized what the men wanted.
They wanted her.

Restless Harmony by Kylie Gilmore

A Clover Park Novel

Jazz singer Zoe Davis is facing eviction due to a teensy, ill-advised fling with her landlord, so when Gabe Reynolds offers the apartment over his garage, Zoe knows better than to get involved with her landlord again. No matter how smoking hot he is.

Former shark lawyer Gabe returns to Clover Park for the stress-free lifestyle only to corner the market on ridiculous “legal” cases. When Zoe comes to him asking for legal advice, Gabe’s solution is a shock even to him.

Gabe’s got good reason to avoid anything permanent, so when Zoe tells him she’ll only be staying a month, he figures it’s the perfect situation. But when passion flares this hot, someone is bound to get burned.

EXCERPT

Gabe heard the door open and then Mrs. Peters exclaimed, “How are you, Zoe, dear?”
He stood abruptly, then sat again, not wanting to appear too eager. The two women chatted, then Mrs. Peters left, and Zoe was in his office.
“Hey,” he said. Brilliant opening line.
She beamed. God, he loved that sunny smile. “Hey there,” she said. “Got the key?”
He fished it out of his pocket and handed it to her.
She stared down at it for a long moment and then tucked it into her tiny pink purse with a purple flower on it. He loved that she was so girly. He grew up in a house filled with testosterone.
“So, Gabe,” she said hesitantly, “I thought maybe we should talk about the rent. I don’t feel right not paying anything. Just tell me what you think is fair so I’m not caught by surprise. I mean, maybe we should sign a rental agreement.” She warmed to her topic. “A legal contract that spells out exactly what’s expected. I dunno, you’re the lawyer. What do you think?”
“No need,” he said. “It’s still free, and you can stay as long as you need to. At least someone can get some use out of the space.”
She narrowed her eyes. “Is this one of those deals where I think I’m getting it for free, but you really want—” she lowered her voice and leaned forward “—services rendered?”
He chuckled. “What kind of services?”
She straightened and raised her brows. “You know.”
He folded his fingers together on top of the desk. She stared at his fingers. “What would your trumpet player say about that?”
She tore her gaze from his fingers and stared at him with wide eyes. “Jordan? He’d be mad as hell.”
He leaned forward, really needing a straight answer on this guy. “Why is that, Zoe?”
She shifted in her seat. “We go way back,” she said, neatly avoiding the question again. “So you don’t want…” She looked side to side in case anyone was listening in, which made him smile, given that it was his private office, and they were very much alone. “You know what.”
He chuckled.
She flipped her hair over her shoulder. “Um, you have to actually answer the question.”
“Do I, Counselor?” he asked in his best intimidating lawyer voice.
She shook her finger at him. “I’ve been warned about you and your lawyerly ways. You’re like a shark.”
His lips twitched. “Daisy told you that.”
“Yeah.”
He smiled. “That’s mighty nice of her to say.”
“Oh, so you don’t deny it? Proud of our sharkiness, are we?”
“It helped me win cases, so yes. That was courtroom Gabe.”
“And who are you now?”
“Just a guy helping out in the community.” She just sat there, studying him across the table, so he added, “Who do you want me to be?”
“Never mind.” She pushed up from the chair, and he snagged her hand.
“Sit.” When she just stood there, looking pissed off, he added, “Please.”
She sat.
“I was just joking around,” he said. “I want you to feel comfortable. I really and truly want to help. That’s all.” He raised a brow, curious if his innocent act worked. Because there was no question that while he did want to help her, he also wanted her. Badly.

4 stars

Here we have the story of Gabe, a lawyer from the bog city. Now practicing law in small town, a bis change in the cases he had grown accustomed to.
His past has been gloom, by death of those he loved.
Zoe had dreams, big ones. Dreams of taking her music to the next level. She wanted something outside of what the small town had to offer and she worked hard to get there.
Waitress jobs and playing gigs here and there to makes ends meets, hoping to one day gain something bigger. A big break so to speak.
When things with Zoe's current landlord backfire and she needs a place to stay, Gabe offers the apartment above his garage. Zoe swore she would never again get involved with her landlord, but life has a way of hitting you when you least expect it.
The pace of this book moves right along. Gabe falls hard and Zoe is a little more resistant of what she feels she should be allowing herself.
When she gets the big break she has been hoping for, Gabe's actions go a little haywire. An uncontrollable jealousy and a need to make it know that Zoe is his, it becomes the most important thing in his world.

Will Zoe give in to the wants and needs of Gabe? Will she finally realize she desires the same things? Or will she decide her dream of making it big outweigh everything else in her life?

USA Today Bestselling Author

I’m not one of those writers who always dreamed of being a writer. In fact, I found English class a little too subjective and slightly suspicious—did all those writers really mean to have the initials J.C. secretly hidden in their stories? Poetry baffled me.
But romance made perfect sense.
Love, hope, a happy ending. The best.
Lucky for me, my mother was an avid reader and left romance novels all over the house. I picked one up at fifteen and fell in love. My all-time favorite romance to this day is Julie Garwood’s The Bride, which has not only a love story, but also witty, smart banter that had me laughing out loud. (In fact I sent Ms. Garwood a fan letter asking how she did it. She responded personally telling me to join Romance Writers of America. Smart lady).
I live in New York with my family, two cats, a nutso dog, and a whole lotta chocolate, wine, and books.
Happy reading!

Blinded by the lights of Broadway, budding theatrical publicist Maxine Kirk stumbles into the arms of her beloved teenage crush, unleashing desires that she never imagined with one soul-obliterating kiss in the rain against the dazzling backdrop of the New York skyline.

Enter Drew McKenzie, a rising star on the Great White Way with dashing looks and talent to match. Heir to a long line of luxury department store moguls, he possesses the social prominence and charisma to land him the top slot on old Manhattan Society’s most desirable bachelor list.

When Drew challenges her to explore his unconventional sense of passion for a week—leaving her with the option to walk away after seven nights—Maxine ponders the consequences of his proposal.

Titillated by his proposition, Maxine clamors to discover a surreptitious and possibly perilous world with Drew, all the while questioning her own preconceived notions on romance.

“So where are you from?”
“A...s-small town—right outside Pittsburgh,” she managed. She had to gather her thoughts. She couldn't stutter her way through an entire conversation with this man all night. Already, she could sense that he was the type who would remind her of her jitters later, and Maxine certainly didn't want this silly evening to haunt her at work.
“What brought you to the big city?” he questioned her.
Purposefully, she stopped herself before she answered him and took in a deep breath. “I’ve always been in love with New York,” she explained, thoughtfully choosing her words. “The theater…the vibrancy…the never ending sense that there’s always something to do or someone to see…”
“Quite a culture shock for a small-town girl, isn’t it?” he asked, his tone softening a bit.
“I’ve been visiting for well over a decade,” she continued and flashed him a weak smile. “I knew what I was getting into.”
“You sure about that?”  Now his eyes were teasing. “There’s always some element of surprise living here.”
“You grew up here?” she asked, knowing he had. She could recite his entire Wikipedia entry, which didn't say much about his personal life other than he was born and raised in Manhattan to an exceedingly wealthy family of Scotch-Irish immigrants.  His ancestors built their fortune as early merchants in New York and went on to create one of the longest-standing, upscale department store chains in the United States.
“I did,” he said so very simply. “The city is under my skin an in my blood. And just like everyone else, I bitch and complain…but I couldn’t live anywhere else.”
All the while, as they carried on with an air of civility, Maxine couldn't ignore those burgeoning feelings—those sensations—that seemed to set her senses fluttering. The intake of his breath and the gentle patter of his voice soothed her. That fresh scent of him, bathed in Clive Christian cologne, tickled her nose, intoxicating her with a blend of citrus and spice—even though she didn't know Clive Christian from Christian Slater. While he stood so close, he managed to refrain from touching her—even with the slightest of movements—and she tingled…shocked by her ache for his caress.
Maxine couldn't even recall their conversation as it was happening. Drew had managed to send her off to some surreal spot from which she really wasn't too keen to return. Although she attempted to remind herself that she wasn't the only woman he'd engaged with that evening, she enjoyed this stilted repartee between them.
As they stood alone together against the backdrop of Manhattan's brilliance, it remained questionable whether he would even remember her in the morning, and she knew the chances were slim to none. However, she decided to indulge in these unexpected seconds of undivided attention in which he indulged her fully.
Releasing his hands from the bannister, he took a step back but then dared to reach out and stroke the backs of his fingers to her cheek. Maxine was certain that he could feel the heat rising from her skin, but she chuckled softly over the tickle of his touch. Again, he seemed to be surveying her, interviewing her for the next round of she knew not what.
“You have all the basics down,” he began. “Smart, well-rounded. Pretty…”
“Pretty?” she nearly choked. No one—aside from her parents and Ben—ever complimented her in such a way.
“Are you arguing with me?” he inquired with an air of displeasure.
Hold it together here, Maxine, she coached herself. “It’s in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.”
“We can discuss that a little later…” he said, just as Maxine felt one huge drop of rain plunk down upon her, right in the middle of her forehead, as she looked up into Drew’s eyes.
Just her damn luck, the rain poured forth from the sky!
“Um…I think it’s time to…”
Lunging forward and surreptitiously slipping his arms around her waist, he pulled her close to him. Maxine didn't have time to think—to react—to his quick and sleek move.  All the while, she reveled in the slight knock of his knees, the strength of his thighs, the feel of his chest pressed against hers…
“It’s time to kiss you, Maxine…”

“I have to issue a punishment this evening.”
Mouth dangling, ready to protest, Maxine could only stammer, “Y-you said you wouldn't...you'd work up to the...pain...”
“Did I say anything about pain this evening?” he asked. “I wouldn't even dare to think of implementing any of the standard consequences yet. It's not going to hurt you—physically—in the slightest, little one. But I do guarantee, it's going to be uncomfortable before you have your pleasure tonight.”
Maxine had no clue as to what Drew had in store, and although she yearned to find out, she quietly commanded herself to remain unruffled.
“Now Maxine, before we delve deeper, we do have some major insubordinations to address.”  Thoughtfully, he tapped his index finger against his chin. “Want to guess one of them?”
Just for sport—and to shatter her already weakening faculties—he traced the underside of her breast. Shoulders slumping, she sighed.
“Oh, for crissakes, Maxine, have I not already warned you?”  He took a step back to shake his head in dismay. “Posture. Mind it. At all times.”
“But you…when you touch my boob…it…”
“Oh, little darling one, I know damn well what happens when I touch your boob,” he said and clasped his hands behind his back. With that, he leaned back just a bit, enhancing the outline of his erection against his rather tight khakis.
Fucking tease, Maxine thought to herself as she popped her shoulders back again to embody a more rigid stance. However, it was her own damn boobs that were getting her into trouble. Again! If only he hadn't pinched her nipple over their (what became disrupted) dinner, she might have mustered some stamina. However, his constant taunting only left her fighting with herself to restrain that ache—that fullness—weighting her tiny silken bra.
“Getting back to the focal point of our conversation here, it’s apparent that you need some shaming here…”
“Shaming?”
With the full bravura of a pet parent who just caught Puppy doing something so very naughty, he questioned, “What did you do?”
“What did I do?” she muttered to herself, scrambling to think back upon their week. She’d tried so hard to remember her indiscretions, but her mind suddenly drew a big, hulking blank!  Fuckballs.
“You were very bad this week, Maxine,” he said as if she needed a reminder. “Last Saturday morning, I recall that you were so very impatient with me…”
“Oh, yeah!” she called out suddenly with a pompous grin. “I...went after…your cock …”
Lifting his cool blue eyes toward the ceiling, he pursed his lips in frustration. Little did she seem to understand that his petulance stemmed from her potty mouth and not directly from her misbehaving ways. She was so damn cute when she tried to be brash, but Maxine didn’t realize how she turned him on with her words.  How he fucking needed her.
“I'm waiting,” he said with a cough. “And I can wait all night...”
Swallowing the lump in her throat, she added, “Sir.”
“Trying to remind myself that you're a mere novice…” he said, mocking frustration with himself. How he loved to watch his sweet and precious Maxine caving into her desires of the unknown.
He rubbed the slight stubble on his chin and minded her thoughtfully. Just to establish her agreement to submit, he had to push her a little—if not goad her—in order to seek their culmination of reward.
“Any idea what else you’ve done this week, Maxine?”
Uh-oh. Now she was at a true loss for words and thought.
“No, Kind Sir…”  She hoped her sweet plea would ease his consternation.
“Remember when you did this?”  Drew stretched his tongue to a point and traced the entire circle of his mouth. “Recall that?”
“Mmm-hmm, Sir…”
“That’s temptation like none other, Maxine—and I shall not be seduced in that manner.”
“But I was…I wanted to…it was flattering…” she attempted—in desperation—to explain. “Wanted to…”
“Just say it!” he ordered. “Say it!”
“I wanted to suck your cock, Sir…”
“Yes, you did,” he nodded with approval. “And did I deem you worthy to do so just yet?”
Sulking again, she shook her head.  True to his word, he was indeed making her feel quite uncomfortable.  “No, Sir…”
“Have you even done that before?”
“Are you kidd—”  However, Maxine stopped herself and retreated quickly to her submission.  “No, Sir, I have not.”
At that moment, it was Drew’s mind that reeled.  He’d be her first blow job—her first.  Oh, just to feel those sweet little lips surrounding him…
Snap the fuck out of it, Mack, he commanded himself.
“And what else?”
As Maxine scrambled to replay every single moment of their week together, her mouth dropped. She came up empty, and she pondered the consequences of her honest response when she admitted, “I, um...I honestly don't know, Sir.”
“You were a minute late in your research homework,” he admonished. “That's three strikes. You're out, Maxine.”
“But I…”
“Want to try for four?  You touched yourself in your sleep. How about five?  Don’t think that Lou didn’t tell me all about how you tried to coax my plans out of him the other night…” he rambled on. “I'm sure we can go for six here if I give you another minute...”
Her lips unfurled into a frown, and she pondered what her punishment might entail. While trepidation still held her in its grip, Maxine grew increasingly curious as to what Drew had in store.
“Come closer, Maxine,” he said, wrapping his arm around her waist and turning her toward the window in one fluid swoop. He pointed to the delicatessen across the street. “You see the little grocery on the corner?”
“Mmmhmm,” she answered, only to feel the pinch of Drew’s fingers on her backside before she corrected herself. “Yes, Sir.”
“You said they deliver?” he casually asked.
“Yes, Sir, they do.”
“So,” he sighed, “you know them personally?”
“I know the delivery guy,” she said, digging her heels into the plush carpet. “Sir...”
“Even better yet...”  Framing her face with those skillful hands, he held her completely still to look deep into the fear rising in her big green eyes. “If you want to continue with our relationship, Maxine, you must first learn to obey.”
“I know, Sir,” she said, swaying her hips as he held her. “And I'll try my best...”
“Good girl,” he praised. “Now I'm just going to make an assumption that you're not on birth control. Am I right?”
She shook her head quickly. “No, Sir...I'm not...”
“Well, we have to take care of that if we're going to make love tonight, don't we, little one?”
“Yes...yes, Sir...”
“What I need you to do right now is very important,” Drew said, circling his hand over her lower back, round and round—dizzying her with arousal. “You’re going to call that number on the awning, and you’re going to ask them to deliver a package of condoms. And then you’re going to answer the door.”
Mortified, Maxine took a step back within the circle of his arm, only to realize that she was trapped between him and the radiator. “Drew!  I...”
“Here’s my phone. You have sixty seconds to finish your call.”
Only in New York, Maxine thought. Only in New Fucking York.

Juliet Braddock’s first efforts in creative writing came long before she learned to put crayon to paper. In fact, she began spinning stories in her head nearly as soon as she could form complete sentences. As long as she can remember, she’d always created sagas about imaginary friends, family members and pop culture icons, and kept everyone around her entertained with her witty—but often very tall—tales.

For her sixth Christmas, Juliet’s mother got her a child’s typewriter to preserve all of those creative thoughts filling her head, but she quickly switched to ball point pens and notebooks when the ribbon ran dry.

Most of Juliet’s early attempts at writing romance focused on members of Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet or young leading men on Broadway. However, as she matured as a writer, she decided that it was just as much fun to create her own romantic heroes and heroines.

At an early age, she also developed a love for big cities, and the tallest of skyscrapers were never high enough for her. Juliet’s wanderlust would eventually lure her to New York, a city she often visited during her formative years, and her love affair with Manhattan began. She’d promised herself that one day she would return for good.

Juliet’s passion for writing and for big cities converged, and after graduating with a degree in Journalism, she decided to set out on a journey to find her heart…just where she’d left it.

A week after her college graduation, Juliet made the big move from a small town to New York City, where she has made her home ever since.

In between building a career in communications and writing on the side, she’s indulged in international travel, theater and art. A wine and food buff, she’s by no means a connoisseur, but she can give a few good restaurant recommendations if you’re in the city.

“There’s something so inspiring about living in a city like New York that’s so rich in culture and so very vibrant. Every neighborhood has its own story to tell,” Juliet says. “I often do my best plotting on the subway, just observing the lives unfolding around me. New York truly has a billion stories nestled between the skyscrapers.”

A proud Manhattanite, Juliet couldn’t live anywhere else—except for Paris, perhaps—and is a gushing cat-mom to a Russian Blue mix who was rescued as a kitten from the streets of Brooklyn.
