KEEPING THE TARNISHED
by Bradon Nave
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Publisher: Limitless Publishing
Release Date: Nov. 3, 2015
- SYNOPSIS -
Johnny Tregalis leaves home the minute he turns eighteen, but he’s the only one who knows why…
Arriving in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Johnny has nothing—not even a plan. Local veterinarian Jackson Everett notices the boy, who reminds him of his own teenage son, and offers him a bed for the night.
Meeting Jackson’s wife Graye, his son Jared, and four-year-old daughter Bryce, Johnny sees a family he could never imagine. He’d been raised by his abusive father after his mother disappeared with his younger brother, and he’s sure he’ll be packed off to a shelter in the morning. He can’t believe it when he’s invited to stay indefinitely.
Johnny refuses to discuss his traumatic past as he attempts to fit in…
The Everetts try to help the profoundly troubled teen, but he seems to be at the mercy of his own mind. He’s held captive by flashbacks, excruciating night terrors, and a mounting inability to distinguish delusion from reality. How can he possibly recover, go to school, have friends…have a life?
Physical scars only hint at deeper psychological devastation…
As the shocking truth comes to light, Johnny struggles to overcome years of abuse, poverty, and despicable horrors to become part of a real family, but is he strong enough to defeat his demons? The Everetts realize Johnny’s journey is now their own, but they face a daunting task.
How much sacrifice is too much when all you can hope for is keeping the tarnished?

Bradon Nave went to high school at a rural Oklahoma school system and graduated with three people in his senior class.
He grew up in the same area as Jordan Mitchell of the band, An Honest Year (their mom's are good friends), and he knows Mark King of the band, Hinder.
He studied in Beijing briefly.
He speaks just enough Spanish to attempt to communicate with his Spanish speaking friends and just enough Mandarin to order food at OKC Chinese restaurants.
He holds a master's of science and works for the Oklahoma State Dept. of Health as the State's Comprehensive Cancer Control Program Coordinator.
Bradon loves camping, fishing and anything outdoors.
He typically runs at least 20 miles a week on the back roads surrounding the home he shares with his wife in Piedmont, Oklahoma.
He married his wife in 2009 and they have two young children, two small dogs and about twenty chickens.
At that moment, at least for the next few minutes, everyone was safe and happy. She felt a deep gratitude for Johnny as she watched him with her husband and son. In just a short period of time the boy had come into her life and completely reorganized her priorities and thought processes. She had a deeper appreciation for the gifts she’d been given in life, and genuinely felt she would never take them for granted again. She hadn’t known him long, but she felt she had known him all his life, like he was supposed to be there with them. She felt this way now, just as she did then when she was washing his tattered and torn clothing. There was a natural fit that had occurred, and each day brought a stronger bond regardless of the trials that had come with taking the boy in. Graye was genuinely overwhelmed with love for this bus stop refugee that her softhearted husband had brought home on an average July night.
She understood that almost every woman has a naturally ingrained sense within her that drives her to protect her offspring at all cost. This sense is either naturally acquired during childbirth, or is gained through a bond that even nature can’t orchestrate. Graye knew that she would die before Johnny was ever hurt again. Perhaps some would argue there hadn’t been enough time to develop such devotion, but those people were not her family, so she was less than concerned with what they may or may not have to say regarding the fledgling the family had informally adopted. This young adult, who was wise beyond his years in some aspects, and awkwardly delayed in others, had finally found the mother’s love that every child needs to flourish; it had only taken him eighteen years.
