Excerpts ( Choose three out of five )
My entire body pulses in the wake of his touch. His words “if you were mine” keep circling around in my head, and with each rotation, something inside me grows. He makes me feel happy and less broken. I feel I could take on the world as long as he’s beside me. Whatever he is, I don’t care. I’ve never felt anything like this, and I’ll go to Hell and back to keep it. Regardless of what happens to me, I have to protect him. I have to keep him safe, always. He grins and squeezes my hand again. My body responds with such intensity, I almost feel as if I were floating. I don’t want it to ever stop. I want to stay strong. I want to be brave. I want to feel safe. He gives me all of that. I want to hold him forever, even if it’s only his hand. “Tomorrow,” he says, pulling me from my thoughts. “I’ll find a way to see you.” “Promise?”
All I want now is to be near her—but that could be the very thing that kills her. “If you care for her, you’ll leave this house and never see her again. If she dies and she’s unknown to Heaven, that’s it. This otherworldly girl will either be sentenced to Hell or cease to exist. Can you face eternity knowing you brought that fate to her?” All the air rushes out of my body as the weight of her life once again rests on my soul. I turn back to her, memorizing as much as I can about her—the way her soft arms wrap around her torso, the color of her eyes that match the emerald gemstone still in my pocket, and soft pink lips I never got to touch. Goodbye, my Maddy. I stand and find the strength to walk out the door and leave the best thing that has ever happened to me.
My heart flutters. I really do like MJ. I blush and pop a few grapes into my mouth. As ecstatic as that makes me feel, I still don’t know, fully, if I can trust him—not until I know what he is. “So … you still haven’t answered my original question. Government experiment, superhero, or something else. Which is it?” He sighs, shaking his head. “I wasn’t created in a lab somewhere.” “What about an alien?” “No.” “Mutant?” “No.” “Warlock?” “Wouldn’t that fall under the category of magician?” “Magicians are usually fake. Warlocks and witches could be real. So are you one?” “No.” Stumped, I rest my chin on my hand and huff in exasperation. “Give up?” he asks. “No. But I’ve made some good progress on my list.” “You have a list?” “Uh huh.” I toss a few more grapes into my mouth. “Of what you think I might be?” I nod. “I don’t suppose you could just let it go?” I narrow my eyes at him. “If I did a bunch of crazy things that you couldn’t explain, would you let it go?” He smirks and shakes his head. “You win.
Justin covers his face in his hands and groans again while they slide down. Once his hands are back at his side, he grins. But it’s nothing like his earlier ones. It’s shifty. Twisted. It reminds me of the Grinch. “Why did I expect this to be easy with you? Do you want to die? Is that it?” “What? No.” My heart beats so hard, I can almost feel it hitting my ribcage. I take a few steps back while trying to regain control of myself and the situation. His eyes soften as harsh lines on his face relax. “If you stay here, Mads, I won’t be responsible for what happens to you.” I stare up at him, studying his expression for cracks in his I-suddenly-care-what-happens-to-you façade. The longer I look into his endless black eyes, they tighter the knots inside me get. “You’re not lying.”
“Now say if you had changed even one of those things, your destiny would be completely different.” I know which fork I would choose to redo if I could. It’s the same one I’ve regretted time and time again. If I could go back, I would have never rejected his first kiss. Damien smiles. “Say, for example, this alternate-reality dream of yours is one where we kissed the first night. Everything would have been different between us. However, it is because you rejected my kiss that I looked at you differently. It is because you were sent away that I missed you. It is because you were promised to another man that I came there that night, which ultimately led to us being together now. As much as I wished we had kissed the first night, I am glad we did not. I, for one, like this path much better.”

Maddy has spent her whole life feeling unloved because her real parents abandoned her, although she didn't know she was adopted until 3 years ago. After she found out she gave up on everything, sports, friends, family pushing everyone away until she was left in her own bubble. She wasn't happy but she was contender at least she thought she was until MJ.
A mysterious guy who showed up out of no where and caused feelings in her like never before. Even with all the weird things like him disappearing into thin air and the electric current she feels every time she touches him, she can't seem to shake her feelings for him.
MJ has an assignment, but when he finds the wrong girl and then feels things with her he thought were long forgotten, he's determined to find a way to be with her. Even though she isn't his assignment he can't seem to keep away from Maddy and the more time he spends with her the more he realizes she's something special.
They are both drawn to each other, but they each have secrets. Will they learn to trust in each other before danger comes for them or will their unwillingness to share their secrets be their downfall?
Maddy is a strong female character she might not think she has allot going for her, but I loved seeing her journey as she realizes that those closest to her really love her and there's more to her existence than the loneliness she feels.
MJ is a bit cold and detached at first until he begins to feel and once he does he gives into the feelings with everything in him. He's not afraid of getting into trouble for breaking the rules, as much as he fears losing the feelings he's just been given back.
Trying to figure out what is what and who is who is part of what makes this book so interesting. You go with the characters on their journey as they learn about each other and learn how to trust. I enjoyed this story and am excited to see more of this series.
