Zen works for "The Agency" what exactly they do is never really explained and is one of the problems I had with this book. I think it's something to do with finding paranormal activity, but it never explains what kind expect the specifics of the case they are working on or gives you any information about The Agency itself. Seth loved Zen at one point in their past and becomes a part of he Agency to learn why he left the way he did. There's some basic back story about these two, but not as much as I would have liked and it left something me unable to connect to the characters.

What there is of the story is interesting and you wonder about the mystery of their case, but with this being a novelette there wasn't any resolution to it and I will assume it will be in the next installment. The romance element was ok, but again I wish there was more to it.

Zen is a hard ass, but with a reason he doesn't think anyone deserves to be with someone with his brand of messed up which is where Seth comes in. Seth is sweet and caring, if a bit naive he sees past the surface of Zen and understands whats underneath it all.

Overall the story was way too short for me, while I do enjoy short reads this one left too many things out in the open for me to truly get into it and the characters like I would have wanted.

“Zen! Get in here.”

Zen rolled his eyes at Chief’s voice booming through the phone intercom and pushed away from his desk. Leaving the comfort of his corner office, he ignored the “ooos” of his fellow coworkers scattered throughout the low-wall partitioned cube farm. He jokingly gave them the middle finger as he turned toward his boss’s office.

Owen “Chief” Krantz, owner of The Agency, wanted to see him, and it wasn’t because he was in trouble, as those around him would like to believe. A new protégé was in his future—if his earlier glimpse of the young pup coming to report for his first day of work was any indication.

Another rookie. The Chief loved to give him “the fresh fish.” He said if the trainees could survive him and his attitude, they could survive anything. He couldn’t argue. The work he did for The Agency was serious, and he expected others to take it the same way. Unfortunately, a good portion of the new employees who came in didn’t. They treated what went on with the cases as a novelty.

Stupid reality shows, making the search for the paranormal, supernatural, and alien existence seem like easy fun. Real people had real issues. They needed to be treated with respect.

Luckily, he did have a way of reading people and cutting through the bullshit, and most people couldn’t handle his frankness. It’s the reason why his boss gave him the newbies. He weeded out the nonserious adventure-seekers. All three “fish” he had in the past year and a half left The Agency and went on to other careers. When the third left, the guy said he was going to go work in his brother’s kennel—the bitches there would be nicer to him.

So be it. Zen liked working alone.

Chief’s office door stood open an inch. Before entering, he decided to take a moment to assess the situation. Always good to get the lay of the land before stepping into something new. Peering in, he fixed his gaze on the recent hire standing opposite Owen, who was sitting at his desk, and purposely eavesdropped on the conversation.

The new guy was already nitpicking his role at The Agency. His main beef: working with Zen on assignments.

“Thanks, Seth, for being here and listening.”
“You don’t have to thank me. What are friends for?” Deciding to be bold, Seth kissed Zen’s forehead, followed by his cheek, and left his face close to Zen’s.
Zen’s hot breath warmed his face, but Seth didn’t mind. His eyes fluttered closed as the words “kiss me” repeated in his head. Just as he wished, Zen’s lips found his, but it wasn’t the easy-going, lingering first kiss he expected.
Zen threw his arms around him in a tight hold and claimed his mouth with wild abandon. Seth’s head reeled. He couldn’t believe he and Zen were kissing. Granted, it wasn’t anything like the soft moments and slow love making he’d imagined over the years, but he’d take what he could get at the moment.
Zen moved his hands up and down Seth’s back. The heated touch under his jacket and over his shirt seared his skin in a delightful way. Zen’s lips pressed upon his almost too violently. He swept his tongue out, forcing Seth to open his mouth.
Seth adored the taste of him, salty and spicy, and his scent of leather and earth as well.
God, for so long he’d waited to have Zen in his arms, his body close. Zen’s lips trailed down his neck. Seth reached up and cupped the back of Zen’s head. Zen pulled at his shirt, tugging it from the confines of his pants without breaking the kiss. In the process of kissing him, somehow Zen was able to unbutton and unzip both their pants and free their cocks out of the openings.
Desire rushed through Seth, clawing at his insides. Zen clutched at him like a drowning man scrambling for purchase on any floating thing to save him from the watery depths. Hands traveled over his shoulders, up his shirt, feeling all the nuances of his chest and back down to his rock-hard cock. The man held their dicks against each other, and Seth sucked in a long stream of air. The feel of their two satiny lengths rubbing together was a heady sensation.
Zen turned their bodies and laid them down. He stretched over Seth. Seth loved feeling the weight and heat of Zen’s strong body atop his. Still, Zen continued to kiss him, and he continued to surrender to the demand of Zen’s mouth.
